IT News and Updates 10/26/17

It’s been a challenging week for the campus IT security group. First, there was a continuation of attacks on the system and the associated “fixes”. Some of their fixes lead to other problems, such as some people losing their connection to Office 365 and shared drives either completely or intermittently. The fixes will be ongoing for some time.

The second issue has been the discovery of many corrupted email accounts and infected computers on campus. It sounds like some of these were for department accounts as well as individuals. Campus IT has been spending a lot of time on both debugging computers and reconfiguring the email servers. This lead to intermittent service disruptions for both people directly affected and some on the periphery. They hope to have all the reconfigurations completed soon. If everyone on campus would just stop clicking on links in suspicious emails, everything would go smoother.

Which leads into the next topic: phishing emails are still coming in at an alarming rate. Stay vigilant. If in doubt, don’t click on. Please review the list of telltale signs of a suspicious email on the Phishing Gallery page if you aren’t sure what to look for.

Also email related: Campus will be “decommissioning” the legacy mail.wsu.edu system effective Nov 20th. Cloud-based Office 365 replaced those mail services. Since everyone here has already been migrated over, it should not affect any of us. If you have any questions, contact CougTech at 335-4357.

The final item I want to mention involves an email circulating that advertises a translation service (translationsupplier.com). I went online to check the scam rating of the linked website. There is a high probability rating that this is a scam. Unless you know of someone that has successfully used this service, I would be cautious.
