IT News & Updates 8/10/18

Not a lot has happened this week except for the items noted below.

Center IT News

  • Large Conf. Room Polycom – Everything appears to be working correctly now. We still don’t have the podium completely set up yet. Hopefully, Nick can do that when he’s here for the phone trip.
  • Fall Classes – students will need to dial into classes with the 4-digital code; Campus will hang-up when class ends.
  • New Phone System – John D’Aleo and Nick Pappin will be here next Tuesday and Wednesday to deal with issues related to the new phone system. Ideally, they would like to talk to anyone with special needs/or wants related to their phone configuration and gather user-specific phone information. Unfortunately, most faculty will be at department retreats. However, anyone around is welcome to talk to John about the new system. An informational meeting via AMS or SfB will be scheduled prior to the actual switch over. We’re hoping to make this process as painless as possible. But at the end of this process, you will all have a totally new phone number.
I’ve attached a document itemizing what to expect with the “cutover.” The second page of the document has a list of questions that John needs answered by the “users” so he can configure your phones correctly. Those of you in charge of lab phones or shared phones will need to answer the questions for those lines separately. If you aren’t going to be around when John is here next week, please send Wendy the requested information.

Campus IT Updates

  • Skype for Business – Microsoft released an update for SfB that is supposed to resolve the bugs that have been plaguing that service. The update will be performed tonight starting at 8 pm and last until @ midnight. During the update period, anyone using SfB may be momentarily disconnected and/or require you to re-authenticate. The impact is expected to be limited to a few brief intervals of a couple of minutes during the maintenance window.
  • K-20 Network Maintenance – ITS was scheduled to move the K-20 router to a new set of routers on 8/9. This is supposed to double the external bandwidth. However, there was a last minute circuit failure (heat related) within the K-20 network that has caused this to be postponed until that issue is corrected. – update: this will be re-scheduled for after student move-in weekend.
