Why am I having problems with my Windows computer on our network?

Here are a few possible reasons why you may have connectivity issues on our network, including not being able to connect to our network printers.

  1. You are using a personal computer and not one “issued” by WSU. You will only have limited success on our network because it will be viewed as “not trusted” by the firewall.
  2. Your computer has a legacy IP address that starts with 207. Only a few of the legacy IP numbers have been “cleared” to pass through the firewall. All others can’t get through or only in a limited fashion. Try changing your settings to dynamic (DHCP) and see if the IP resets to a number beginning with 10.
  3. You are running Windows 10 Home Edition. This is a stripped-down version of Windows. CAHNRS IT can help you upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. However, you will need to back up all of your files ahead of time on a separate drive to be reinstalled after the system upgrade. This may include re-installing any special software, such as SAS. So, make sure you have the installation media handy.
  4. After February 2020, previous versions of Windows will not be supported by Microsoft. This means that there will be no security updates. Therefore, if you have not upgraded to Windows Pro 10 by that time, you may not be able to access the network.

If you are experiencing problems, don’t hesitate to contact CAHNRS IT by emailing a ticket to cit.support@wsu.edu.
