Quarantine Pest Information

Quarantine pests such as insects, mites and plant disease organisms are among the top non-tariff trade barriers for exporting produce from one country to another. The table below shows the quarantine pests found in the USDA database for tree fruit crops we grow here in the Pacific Northwest with superscript indicators for prevalence in our area.  Under each country name we’ve added the rank for the designated crop exported to that country (2015 crop year). For example, ‘C(8)’ means that exports of sweet cherries to that country ranked 8 out of the 10 top markets for sweet cherry exports from WA state.

The leading quarantine pests of note for our area are Codling moth (Cydia pomonella) and Oriental fruit moth (Cydia [Grapholita] molesta). For more information see our guides on identifying Codling moth and Oriental fruit moth.

Key to superscript indicators:

• ‘1’ indicates “pest of concern” and the work plan for that country requires special examination and/or treatment for the specified pest or come from a designated pest-free zone; detection of pest upon receipt will cause shipment rejection;
• ‘2’ indicaties that the pest doesn’t occur in our region;
• ‘3’ indicates shipment could be rejected if detected upon receipt; may or may not appear on phytosanitary statement;
• ‘4’ indicates that even a dead specimen can cause shipment rejection;
