‘WA 5’
Following on the heels of last year’s ‘WA 2’, WSU’s apple breeding program is making available for grower evaluation it’s next release, ‘WA 5’. ‘WA 5’ is a cross of ‘Splendour’ x ‘Co-op 15’
Tree characteristics:
- Compact growth habit
- Precocious and productive
- Moderate susceptibility to powdery mildew and fire blight
Fruit characteristics:
- Ripens early to mid Sept (follows Gala)
- Medium size; round
- Very attractive, bright
- Distinctive red/orange stripe over yellow
- Little russet or bitterpit
Eating Quality:
- Excellent texture – crisp, very juicy and very firm out of storage (has “ideal” combination of ethylene genes)
- Good sugar/acid balance
- To achieve optimal quality, do not over crop or pick too early
