{"id":138,"date":"2021-12-02T10:49:09","date_gmt":"2021-12-02T18:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tfrec.cahnrs.wsu.edu\/beers-tfentomology\/?page_id=138"},"modified":"2024-08-27T17:24:59","modified_gmt":"2024-08-28T00:24:59","slug":"identifying-bmsb","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tfrec.cahnrs.wsu.edu\/beers-tfentomology\/bmsb\/identifying-bmsb\/","title":{"rendered":"Identifying BMSB"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/cahnrs\/uploads\/sites\/31\/BMSB-ID-small-234x300.png\" alt=\"Large brown stink bug with annotations showing the white bands on the antenna, smooth shoulders and black and white pattern on abdomen.\" class=\"wp-image-102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/cahnrs\/uploads\/sites\/31\/BMSB-ID-small-234x300.png 234w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/cahnrs\/uploads\/sites\/31\/BMSB-ID-small.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>BMSB adults are one of the larger stink bugs encountered in WA (12-17 mm).&nbsp; Adults have several key characteristics that distinguish it (apart from their large size):&nbsp; the alternating white bands on the antennae, and the smooth margin on the front edge of the prothorax.&nbsp; They also have alternating light and dark bands around margins of the abdomen; however, this feature is not unique to brown marmorated stink bug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brown marmorated stink bug is most likely to be confused with the other brown stink bugs, namely the <a href=\"http:\/\/treefruit.wsu.edu\/crop-protection\/opm\/stink-bugs\/\">consperse stink bug<\/a> (<em>Euchistus conspersus<\/em>) and predatory (beneficial) stink bugs in the genus <em>Brochymena<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/treefruit.wsu.edu\/crop-protection\/opm\/other-predatory-bugs\/\">rough stink bugs<\/a>).&nbsp; The rough stink bug has a coarsely toothed margin on the prothorax, with solid colored antennae.&nbsp; The consperse stink bug is much smaller, has a finely toothed margin on the prothorax, and lacks white banding on the antennae. Stink bugs in the genus <em>Chlorochroa<\/em> are also brown, but have smooth white margin on the prothorax and abdomen, and a white dot at the tip of the prothorax, where the forewings
