This is in reference to an email supposedly sent out by our Dean, Andre Wright. I never received the email Bill refers to so I can’t post an image. But it sounds like it is a bit different from the phishing we have been receiving from compromised WSU email accounts. Instead, someone has set up a Gmail account posing as Andre Wright (or is spoofing the address). The address looks like the real WSU address except it ends in gmail.com instead of wsu.edu. I’m assuming the fake email is asking for your personal information. I seriously doubt that the Dean would ever ask for this in this fashion.

If you aren’t sure how to identify a phishing email, I suggest you take a look at my older post on recognizing phishing emails, as well as the recent post regarding a fake email from President Shulz. You can also view the Phishing Gallery I put together.

Netflix phishing email

The second phishing email is a bit different. This one is distributed via corrupted email accounts, as we’ve seen in the past. But this one pretends to be from Netflix. It wants you to verify your account information, specifically your email credentials, or it will lock you out. With the popularity of Netflix, they are gambling that they will stumble on to a person with a Netflix account that will panic and give away their information. Don’t fall for it. What I find interesting with this particular email is that it is a bit vague about which account they are threatening to cut off. Here’s the treat: “Kindly verify your e-mail within 24 hours or your e-mail will be suspended.” I’m guessing this is of non-US origin due to the wording “Kindly..” and the use of “e-mail” rather than “email” which is now the norm here. The image is posted below and added to the Phishing Gallery. Don’t forget to forward all fake WSU email messages to abuse@wsu.edu.

                ↑

There are two new email phishing scams you should be aware of.
