TFREC Facilities Policies

Laboratories and Equipment

All facilities and equipment are under the direct or cursory supervision of a scientist or supervisor. There is broad use of the facilities and equipment and proper cooperation in the use of all facilities is necessary. It is only common courtesy to get permission from the person in charge of a specific facility, piece of equipment, chemical, or other item before making use of it. This applies to all areas, including the greenhouses, orchards, and farm equipment.

The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required to enter some laboratories. Read and follow the PPE requirements posted outside each lab.

WSU facilities and equipment are for official use only. Personal use if prohibited.

Orchards and Grounds

IN accordance with WAC 16-233* pesticide application information, including date, time, and re-entry interval for TFREC grounds and orchards is posted in the hallway above the mailboxes (Overley building)and online. It is your responsibility to check the current spray information before working in the field.

*The worker protection standard (WAC 16-233) is “designed to reduce the risk of illness or injury resulting from workers’ and handlers’ occupational exposures to pesticides.”

Energy Conservation

Our utility budget for electricity and natural gas has not kept pace with increased requirements and rate increases for these services. A number of energy-reducing measures, including closure of certain buildings, greenhouses, and cold storage facilities, have not been sufficient to balance the utility budget.

If we are to avoid a drastic reduction of needed services or facility use, every employee must assist in energy conservation. Turn off unused lights, motors, and other equipment. Thermostats are set for summer or winter use according to state regulations. They are not to be changed.

Pets

Bringing pets such as dogs onto TFREC property is strongly discouraged. Prohibitions follow WSU campus policy.

Smoking

Washington state law (RCW Chapter 70.160) prohibits smoking in any University owned, leased, or rented public place or place of employment. WSU Pullman, WSU Spokane, WSU Tri-Cities, and WSU Vancouver have additional restrictions regarding tobacco and nicotine use on campus. See below. NOTE: Such restrictions do not apply to tobacco cessation programs or approved research. For detailed policy information related to each of these locations review this policy (pdf)..
Any smoking at TFREC MUST NOT be within 25 feet of entrances, exits, windows that open, and ventilation intakes.

The quiz for this section will be combined in the “Security, Facilities, and Vehicle Use Quiz” found at the end of the Vehicle use page.
